Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training is similar to physical first aid but focuses on mental health. It teaches you how to recognise when someone may be experiencing a mental health difficulty or emergency, and how to respond until professional support is available.
MHFAiders help create safer, more supportive learning and work environments by noticing signs of distress and responding with care and confidence. This practical, evidence based course is widely recognised across Australia.
By completing this training, you will become a qualified Mental Health First Aider, with the skills to support adult students and colleagues.
This course is offered as blended online OR in person.
The blended online course includes:
- Part 1: A self-paced online module completed on the Mental Health First Aid website. This must be finished before the online session in Part 2.
- Part 2: A facilitator-led online session with real-life examples and skills practice.
The in-person course runs over two consecutive days and is led by a facilitator in a classroom with other participants. This course includes lunch and refreshments.
Educators, leaders, and staffworking in ACE and RTOs who want to become accredited Mental Health First Aiders and support adult students and colleagues.
To be eligible for this training, you must:
- Work for an organisation with a Funded Activities Agreement (FAA) with the South Australian Government, or be TAFE SA; AND
- Deliver, or help deliver, publicly funded VET and/or ACE in South Australia
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Recognise common signs of mental health challenges in adults
- Use an evidence-based action plan to start a supportive conversation
- Respond to mental health emergencies and provide initial support
- Understand barriers to seeking help and how to reduce them
- Apply self care strategies in their role as a Mental Health First Aider
- Accreditation as a Mental Health First Aider
- Lunch and morning/afternoon tea (in person sessions only)
