This introductory workshop looks at specific learning difficulties (SLDs), including dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia. It explores how these difficulties can affect adult learners’ reading, writing, numeracy and participation in the classroom.
Over three hours, you will learn the basics and focus on practical, evidence‑based strategies you can start using straight away.
The session covers:
- an overview of learning difficulties and learning disabilities
- your responsibilities under the Disability Discrimination Act
- supporting learner wellbeing
- practical strategies to support learning
- organisation and time management supports
- positive and respectful communication techniques
- reasonable adjustments and assessment accommodations
- assistive technologies and tools that support learner success.

This workshop is for ACE and VET educators who want practical and realistic ways to understand and support adult learners with SLDs. It is especially useful for educators working with diverse groups or mixed‑ability classes.
This session is also suitable for student support staff and staff involved in curriculum, learning design and quality.
To be eligible for this training, you must:
- Work for an organisation with a Funded Activities Agreement (FAA) with the South Australian Government, or be TAFE SA; AND
- Deliver, or help deliver, publicly funded VET and/or ACE in South Australia
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
- understand the difference between learning difficulties and learning disabilities, and know your basic responsibilities under the Disability Discrimination Act
- use practical strategies to support learners with SLDs in learning, organisation, time management, and communication
- identify and apply simple reasonable adjustments and assessment accommodations so learners can participate fairly
- explore assistive technologies and tools that make learning more accessible and support learner success
