A trauma‑informed teaching approach recognises how trauma can shape the way adults think, behave and learn. This workshop uses brain science, education research and practical strategies to help educators create safe, inclusive learning environments and look after their own wellbeing, guided by the principles of safety, trust, choice, collaboration and empowerment.
Trauma-informed practice is a key area of focus for Skills SA as part of the Student Support Standards professional development requirements.
ACE and VET educators who want practical, strengths-based strategies to support adult learners who have experienced trauma.
To be eligible for this training, you must:
- Work for an organisation with a Funded Activities Agreement (FAA) with the South Australian Government, or be TAFE SA; AND
- Deliver, or help deliver, publicly funded VET and/or ACE in South Australia.
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
- Understand different types of trauma and how they affect learning
- Apply trauma-informed principles in education settings
- Apply teaching strategies that promote safety and trust
- Support your own wellbeing when working with trauma-affected learners.

Sam is a teacher and professional learning facilitator at Connect.Ed, with experience in schools, OSHC and adult education in South Australia. His work focuses on the link between learning, wellbeing and how trauma can affect engagement at all stages of life.
Sam supports educators, leaders and teams through trauma‑informed practice, mindfulness and self‑awareness, using a practical and relatable approach. He is passionate about creating safe, supportive learning environments where wellbeing supports learning and growth.
