Skills SA partnered with the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) to deliver practical professional development webinars for VET and ACE trainers and assessors. These sessions were recorded and assist educators to identify learners’ foundation skills needs and use current, evidence based approaches to support learning.
This session focused on why mathematics and numeracy skills are important for adult learners. It also explained the key skills that support numeracy, using current research and examples from practice.

- An introduction to the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF)
- What the ACSF levels mean in practice
- What “spiky profiles” are and why they matter

Dave Tout, ACER
David Tout has over 50 years of experience in education, most of it in the VET sector. He has worked across schools, TAFEs, community organisations, universities, national education bodies, and industry.
David has extensive experience in teaching, training, research, curriculum design, assessment, and resource development at state, national, and international levels. He is ACER’s expert in the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF).
