From industry to educator
Meet Ninh, ACE educator at Community Access and Services SA (CAASSA)
- Ninh teaches digital and literacy skills to the Vietnamese community.
- Ninh has been teaching Adult Community Education (ACE) for 1 year.
- Ninh previously worked as an engineer and is currently a PhD student focusing on hydraulic engineering.

“I became an ACE educator because I wanted to support people in my community, especially older Vietnamese community members. I love to support Vietnamese people… it’s lovely to support people in my community. I already knew CAASSA through community events, and when I saw there was an educator role available, I felt it was a good way to give back and contribute.”
“My background is in engineering, and I’m currently a PhD student. I was already involved in teaching through tutoring at Adelaide University and supporting course coordinators with course design in engineering disciplines. During tutoring role, I participated in several workshops, training sessions, and professional development activities focused on innovative teaching practices offered by the university.
When I started teaching in the community, I completed the Certificate in Universal Design for Learning in Tertiary Education. This helped me develop the skills and confidence to work effectively as an ACE educator, particularly in delivering digital and literacy programs to diverse learners.”
“What I value most is engagement – seeing learners feel confident, involved and motivated. In my opinion, engagement is the most important thing for education.
I enjoy creating an inclusive learning environment where people feel comfortable, supported, and connected – not just focused on formal learning outcomes. Sometimes they come here not only just for learning… the class looks like a second home for them.”
“My work is quite varied. I balance ACE teaching with university tutoring and my PhD studies. In my ACE role, a typical day includes:
- preparing lessons that suit learners with different language, literacy and confidence levels
- creating activities that encourage participation and confidence
- sharing materials ahead of class using accessible platforms like WhatsApp
- supporting both learning and social connection in the classroom
I try to create a friendly learning environment… encourage them to join activities and give ideas.”
“Most importantly, ACE teaching is about understanding why learners are there and supporting their goals.
You need to be open to learning new approaches and tools, especially technology and inclusive teaching methods. We need to update day by day… use tools to make the lesson easier to deliver and easier to understand.”
