This workshop will help you better understand, connect with and support Autistic adult learners. Autism is a lifelong developmental condition that affects how a person experiences, understands, and interacts with the world. Every Autistic person is different, with their own strengths, views, and support needs.
This session uses a strengths-based, neuro‑affirming approach. It will help you feel more confident when working with Autistic learners in VET and ACE settings.
In this workshop, you will:
- Learn how to use neuro‑affirming language and confidently respect adult learners’ language preferences
- Build knowledge and understanding of common experiences and characteristics of Autism and how they can interact with learning environments
- Use teaching and communication strategies that support Autistic learners’ strengths and needs
- Create inclusive learning environments that recognise sensory differences and diverse communication styles.
This workshop is for ACE and VET educators who want to better support Autistic adult learners.
This session is also suitable for student support staff and staff involved in curriculum, learning design and quality.
To be eligible for this training, you must:
- Work for an organisation with a Funded Activities Agreement (FAA) with the South Australian Government, or be TAFE SA; AND
- Deliver, or help deliver, publicly funded VET and/or ACE in South Australia
By the end of the session, you will be able to:
- Use appropriate and respectful language
- Understand the wide range of Autistic characteristics
- Apply strategies that support Autistic learners
- Create learning environments that are inclusive and supportive of Autistic learners.

Tammy McGowan, Reframing Autism
Tammy McGowan (she/her) lives on Kaurna land in South Australia and is a proud Autistic woman with lived experience of ADHD and multiple disabilities. She is a disability consultant, project coordinator and trainer, with 16 years of experience in advocacy.
Tammy presents on autism, ADHD, trauma and disability across in‑person, online and podcast settings, and holds advisory roles with several organisations. She is passionate about representation, community connection, active citizenship and her dogs.
